European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
